Sometimes we like to go with the cheap product over the one that costs $0.50 more and it all works out. However, this is a case when ALDI’s product just doesn’t cut it. It’s not because ALDI’s peppercorns taste bad. The peppercorns are great and in a taste test I wouldn’t be able to tell between their black peppercorns and McCormick’s. We had used ALDI’s grinder for a few days when we noticed how difficult it was to grind the pepper. Granted, these are disposable grinders, but some level of quality and durability is expected. In this case, we decided to go ahead and spend an extra $0.50 when the time came to replace the grinder. We bought a McCormick’s grinder and it was evident how much better the grinder was. McCormick’s product cuts through the peppercorns with ease. We tried the ALDI product again and it was just a little laborious to use. This is a good example when spending a few extra pennies is worth it.

Aldi Fit and Active Whole Wheat Spaghetti
Tuesday, January 5th, 2010We use either multi grain or whole wheat pasta around our house quite often. We choose to use this in some dishes because whole wheat pasta is a healthier choice with better carbs than the type of pasta made with white flour. For a processed food, this is just more substantial and better to digest. Aldi hasn’t offered anything to compete with these products in our area so I was naturally interested when I saw this product. It is natural to be skeptical about store brands, but as I’ve learned with Aldi, their stuff is usually above average and usually approaching the quality of a name brand. That was certainly the case with the Fit and Active Whole Wheat Spaghetti. This was every bit the quality of Barilla and although it wasn’t as good as Heartland, nobody can expect any off brand to be the same as a specialized brand like Heartland. We used this product to make a tossed pasta with some grilled chicken, sun dried tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, and fresh dried basil. The quality was just as good as a name brand. Aldi hits another home run with this product.
Packaging Change for Aldi’s Carlini Olive Oil
Sunday, January 3rd, 2010It’s refreshing when a company changes a product to make it more appealing to the eye, while still providing the same quality and most importantly not changing the size or price of the product. Aldi’s Carlini Olive Oil has a new look, and the new packaging makes it look, well, expensive. As far as I can tell, nothing has changed about the olive oil, although there are now 130 calories per serving (1 Tbsp), rather than the previous 120 calories. Aldi’s olive oil is a product of a large olive oil bottler in Italy. We have used a number of olive oils and have found that this oil is above average for both Italian and Latin American cooking.
While the price has stayed the same, the redesign of the package shows that Aldi is positioning itself to show the consumer that it can provide a high end product at an affordable price. I’ve noticed that Aldi is redesigning the packaging of some of its other products as well, a necessary marketing tool to draw the consumers eye in on products that the consumer may have overlooked in the past. Aldi is much underrated in my opinion, and has a lot to offer in the grocery store game. Because their primary products are designed by Aldi for Aldi and only sold in their stores, it may be a tough sell getting new consumers to try their products. Word of mouth marketing by Aldi’s current consumers will be one of their best tools to get new consumers into the stores to see for themselves the high quality products that Aldi has to offer.
Aldi: Deals for the Week of December 20-26, 2009
Monday, December 21st, 2009I wanted to start highlighting some of the sales that are available at Aldi each week that are great buys at low prices. I shop Aldi weekly to stretch our budget, and while things like milk, eggs, produce, and sugar fluctuate in price; many of their items don’t fluctuate in price, unless they happen to go on sale. For the last few weeks, butter has been on sale, and I have been stocking up, especially since it is baking time around my house. Aldi provides high quality items at affordable prices that I can’t afford to pass up. Aldi is how we stretch our budget as far as we do, with high quality food, at low prices, that I know will stand up to the quality of its name brand counterpart. Aldi makes it easy to grocery shop, and while I still love to chase a deal with my coupons, I am still able to find great prices at Aldi that keep me coming back every week.

Product Review: Aldi Antoinette Havarti Cheese
Tuesday, November 24th, 2009
This purchase was a little out of character for us since we generally do not buy anything exotic at ALDI. I cannot say we’ve ever heard of Havarti cheese. However, we’d been talking about making our own macaroni and cheese for a while and when we were going through the ALDI cooler section, we noticed the Antoinette Creamy Havarti cheese. We bought a block and were very impressed. Havarti is a soft and creamy cheese with the consistency of a Mozzarella. We used a few slices for grilled cheeses and then saved about 2/3 of the block for our homemade macaroni and cheese recipe. We mixed the Havarti with Parmesan and Colby for our macaroni and cheese. The flavor and quality of this cheese was exceptional. The creaminess was perfect for the recipe. I will admit I’ve never purchased a name brand of Havarti type cheese or tasted it, but may not need to considering ALDI’s quality. This product is a prime example of why ALDI is a great store. You’ll never find everything you need at ALDI, but you’ll find a number of great opportunities to buy food you wouldn’t expect. For example, chicken sausage, Italian olive oil, and Danish cheese. We have bought exotic cheeses before at another store in town for a lot more money. ALDI has great deals for less money.
Product Review: Beaumont Donut Store Blend Coffee
Saturday, November 14th, 2009If you start to shop at ALDI regularly, your curiosity about many of their products will get to you. I’ve found that most of the time I am skeptical about the quality, but I’m usually surprised about what I get when I buy one of their private label products. I’ve discussed the fact that I’ve seen a name brand manufacturer’s truck drop their milk off behind their store. Most people are aware that private label products are generally made by the name brand manufacturer. It only makes sense. With the way business works, it just makes sense for private label products to be made that way since there is a steep cost to enter the manufacturing world. We decided to try the Beaumont Donut Store Blend Coffee. We paid $3.99 for 12 oz. The stuff smelled great when we opened its trendy mylar package. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a picky coffee drinker. I put Splenda and milk in mine and I just don’t pay too much attention to the flavor of the coffee. My husband is the exact opposite. He is not a daily coffee drinker and he drinks his black for the flavor of the beans. He didn’t find the plain package of Beaumont Coffee acceptable when we reviewed it before. This package was good. I liked the flavor of it and it was a bit higher quality than your standard grocery store packages of coffee. It’s obviously made to compete with Dunkin Donuts coffee and my husband felt it was comparable and he couldn’t find any faults with it. The roast flavor is a bit deeper than the standard coffee and you can tell it is blended. We recommend the Beaumont Donut Store Blend. It’s not Starbucks or Aspen quality, but it is certainly up there with the better commercial coffees.
Meals for Less than $10.00: Spaghetti with Fresh Herbs and Vegetables
Monday, October 26th, 2009After making kebabs on the grill yesterday, we had one leftover zucchini, some wedges of onion, and two roma tomatoes. Of course, we always keep fresh parsley around, so we had everything we needed to make a fresh lunch after arriving home from church. I started off with some garlic, some thyme we dried from our garden, kosher salt, fresh ground pepper, and some regular olive oil. I then added the vegetables and cooked this mixture while the spaghetti was boiling. I cooked the spaghetti to al dente and then added it to the vegetable mixture. The oil, herbs, and vegetables absorbed into the spaghetti for a few minutes for a great flavor. This made the perfect light lunch on a Sunday since we tend to do a little snacking in the afternoon anyway.
1 zucchini ($0.76)
2 roma tomatoes ($0.55)
3 cloves garlic, minced ($0.10)
1 teaspoon kosher salt ($0.05)
1 teaspoon black pepper ($0.05)
1/4 cup regular olive oil ($0.40)
1 lb Reggano spaghetti ($0.88)
4 tablespoons parmesan cheese ($0.50)
1/2 small red onion, cut into wedges ($0.20)
1/4 cup fresh parsley ($0.10)
Total: $3.59
NOTE: I don’t add sales taxes to these prices because many states do not charge sales taxes on food or groceries.
Product Review: Sweet & Sour Stir-Fry (Aldi brand)
Thursday, October 1st, 2009The great thing about shopping at Aldi is that they have a large variety of different foods to offer at affordable prices with consistent quality. One of the problems of shopping at Aldi is that they have such a huge variety of items available, it is sometimes difficult to see everything they have to offer. The items are stocked closely together because the intent is not to try and market their brand to you, you already know that you’re buying their brand.
While my husband and I were shopping for groceries we came across two items we hadn’t seen before; Aldi’s Sweet & Sour Stir-Fry and their Szechuan Stir-Fry. We have actually cooked and like their Teriyaki Stir-fry that includes noodles. The Sweet & Sour Stir-Fry and Szechuan Stir-Fry do not include noodles, but we added rice to to make the meal complete.
The Sweet & Sour Stir-Fry includes sugar snap peas, carrots, pineapple, and red bell peppers, along with a sweet and sour sauce. The flavors work really well together, and it is ready in about ten minutes. For our meal we included a cup of rice and three chicken breasts to feed our family of four and a half and we had leftovers. From a nutrition stand-point the meal is good because it includes a lot of vegetables and some fruit (a few pineapple chunks). My daughters and I enjoy pineapple so I told them the next time we cook this meal we would add more pineapple.
I think that the key to the stir-fry is simmering the ingredients together in the sweet and sour sauce. Simmering allows all of the ingredients to bring out their full flavor. If adding additional pineapple to this I would definitely add during the first step of cooking the vegetables so that everything is fully heated before adding the sauce, allowing all of the flavors to combine. The meal is so simple your teenager could probably do this by themselves for a healthy dinner.
This meal also worked out to be a Meal for Less than $10.00 and it is something that we will eat again in the future. The stir-fry was $2.49; a cup a rice approximately $.50; and three chicken breasts $3.00 — a complete meal for $5.99. We’ll add this one as a favorite to our meal list, and continue looking for new ideas when we shop Aldi.
