Get Ready for 2009’s Sales Tax Holidays

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

I am excited about this weekend because it is our states tax free weekend on clothing and shoes that retail for less than $100 (check for exclusions). The great thing about the tax free weekend is that in combination with not having to pay taxes on these items, I can also use coupons if I have them and take advantage of sale and clearance prices where available.

I was able to locate sixteen states that are participating in the Sales Tax Holiday and of those sixteen, ten are having their sales tax holiday this weekend August 7-9, 2009. Some states include only clothing and shoes in their sales tax holiday and others include computers, school supplies, and miscellaneous items. Check your state for specific information on what is included.

Our sales tax is almost 9% so I am looking forward to the savings I will see purchasing some shoes and a few other clothing items to finish out our daughters school wardrobe for the start of the year. As with any type of savings that is received by taking advantage of sales, tax free holidays, coupons, and clearance finds the bottom line is that it is not a good deal if it puts us in a negative financial position.
